In South Africa, approximately 10,000 babies are born with a congenital heart defect.  Only about 700 are operated on and go on to live a full and healthy life. About 9,000 babies born with a congenital heart defect will not live to adulthood.

In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 270,000 babies are born with a congenital heart defect.  It is estimated that less than 5% of these babies are operated on and go on to live a full and healthy life. About 260,000 of the sub-Saharan African babies born with a congenital heart defect will not live to adulthood.

The Cardiothoracic Specialists working at the Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute have made a commitment to deliver cardiac and thoracic care to patients referred by the Maboneng Foundation.

The Maboneng Foundation's ultimate goal is to reduce the death rate amongst South African children born with a congenital heart defect, conducting surgeries that will give them life and their families hope and happiness.
